Next year Slovenia will host the 12th European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO), in which more than 200 contestants from 50 countries will participate. Apart from problem-based tasks the goal of the competition is to stress the importance of female representation in STEM fields (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) and thus provide highly skilled human resources in sectors contributing substantially to economic development and growth.
The 7-day Olympiad will be organized by DMFA (Society of Mathematicians, Physicists and Astronomers of Slovenia) and held from 13 to 19 April 2023 in Portorož, Slovenia. 150 people will cooperate in organising the event, among them 40 top mathematicians in charge of designing tasks and approximately 80 guides and promoters. From every country a team of four extremely talented 16- to 20-year-olds will attend. There will be two competition days and on each day the contestants will be given three tasks to complete in 4 and a half hours. The contestants have been endorsed by the minister of education dr. Igor Papič.
The event is endorsed by Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, Ministry of Labour, Family, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities, University of Ljubljana, University of Maribor and University of Primorska.
